Before Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadyumu was built , the field was known as Papazın Çayırı. The field, however, became the very first football pitch of Turkey, where the first league games of the Istanbul Football League were all held successively. In 1908, local teams of the league needed a regular soccer field, so this land was leased from the Ottoman Sultan Abdülhamid II for 30 Ottoman gold pounds a year. The total construction cost was 3,000 Ottoman gold pounds. The name was changed to the Union Club Field after the club which made the highest donation for the construction.
The Union Club Field was used by many teams in İstanbul, including the owner, Union Club (which changed its name to İttihatspor after World War I), Fenerbahçe, Galatasaray and Beşiktaş. However, it had lost its importance when a bigger venue, the Taksim Stadium, was built in 1922, inside the courtyard of the historic Taksim Topçu Kışlası (Taksim Artillery Barracks), which was located at the present-day Taksim Gezi Parkı (Taksim Park).
İttihatspor (which had close relations with the political İttihat ve Terakki), was forced to sell it to the state, in which Şükrü Saracoğlu was a member of the CHP government. Thus, the ownership of the stadium passed to the state, but the field was immediately leased to Fenerbahçe. Later, on May 27th 1933, Fenerbahçe purchased the stadium from the government when Şükrü Saracoğlu was the President of Fenerbahçe, for either the symbolic amount of 1 TL or the worth of the stadium which was 9000 TL.
The name of the field was changed to Fenerbahçe Stadium, and this made Fenerbahçe SK the first football club in Turkey to own its stadium, with the help of the Şükrü Saracoğlu government. In the following years, Fenerbahçe SK renovated the stadium and increased its seating capacity. By the year 1949, Fenerbahçe Stadium was the largest football venue in Turkey, with a seating capacity of 25,000.
The name of the stadium was changed once more in 1998, becoming Fenerbahçe Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium, named after Fenerbahçe's legendary chairman and Turkey's 6th Prime Minister Şükrü Saracoğlu. In 1999, the latest round of renovations and capacity increasing projects started. The tribunes on the four sides of the stadium were torn down one at a time, as the Turkish Super League seasons progressed, and the entire renewal and construction project was finalised in 2006, with the immense efforts of the Fenerbahçe president Aziz Yıldırım and the team's board of directors. Since the completion of the enlargement and renewal works in 2006, it is the most attractive, effective and advanced football stadium of Turkey.

FENERBAHÇE HISTORY
Fenerbahçe was founded nearly a century ago in the province of Kadiköy in Istanbul. The founders were Mr. Nurizade Ziya Songülen, Mr. Ayetullah and Mr. Necip Okaner. This group of individuals founded the club secretly in order to keep a low profile and not get into any trouble with the strict Ottoman rule. So strict in fact that the Sultan, Abdulhamit the 2nd, forbid that the Turkish youth may not set up a club nor engage in the game of football played by the English families that was watched in envy.
After the first meeting of the founders however, Nurizade Ziya Songülen is elected the first President, whilst Mr. Ayetullah is the General Secretary and Mr Necip Okaner assumes General Captaincy. The first emblem of the club is the Lighthouse which is situated on Fenerbahçe cape whilst the first colours of the club are the colours of the daffodils, white and yellow, scattered around the Fenerbahçe peninsula. The emblem and colours were to be changed in 1910 when the badge was redesigned by Topuz Hikmet and the colours were changed as Yellow and Navy. Until a change of legislation in 1908, Fenerbahçe’s activities are run under strict secrecy. After this date however, the new law requires that clubs must register in order to exist legally. From that day on, the club was to take its place amongst the top of the Turkish club’s and achieve much success. Fenerbahçe Spor Kulübü first football team included Asaf, Ziya Hasan, Sami, Ayetullah, Mazhar, Necip Fethi, Galip, Huseyin, Hasan and Nevzat. This team joined the Istanbul League in 1909 but achieved nothing in its first three seasons. In the 1912-1913 season a team with Ali Said, Galip, Arif, Izzi, Huseyin, Sabri, Hikmet, Said, Hasan Kamil, Nuri and Mico win the first championship of the club. Apart from being the first championship it had more significance as it was won without a single defeat throughout the season.E-posta: editor@fenerbahce.org

TURNING A NEW PAGE
Turkey, who failed to qualify for the 2004 European Championship finals and 2006 World Cup finals, turned a new page for the 2008 European Championship finals. Now, foreign national players holding a Turkish passport have the opportunity to play for the Turkish National Team. The first example is the Brazilian midfielder Marco Aurelio of Fenerbahçe. Aurelio, who now holds a Turkish passport and changed his name to Mehmet, was called up by Turkey's head-coach Fatih Terim for the first time to line up during the friendly match played against Luxemburg. Determined to qualify for the 2008 European Championship finals, the Turkish National Team are continuing their efforts towards that goal.
BIRTH OF THE TURKISH FOOTBALL FEDERATION
Following the formation of the Union of Turkish Training Associations, being Turkey's first sports authority, the Turkish Football Federation was established under the name "Futbol Hey'et-i Müttehidesi" at a meeting held in the meeting hall of Letafet Apartment House in Şehzadebaşı in 1923, and Yusuf Ziya Öniş was elected first President. Following the Federation's establishment, Turkey applied to FIFA for membership and became FIFA's 26th member on 21 May 1923.
As a FIFA member, the Turkish National Team played their first international match against Romania at the Istanbul Taksim Stadium on 26 October 1923, only three days before the Republic of Turkey was declared. The match ended with a 2-2 draw. Later, Billy Hunter of Scotland was hired to prepare the Turkish National Team for the 1924 Paris Olympic Games. Hunter was the first coach to introduce Turkish footballers to modern football and train them systematically.
The match played and lost 5-2 against Czechoslovakia during the 1924 Paris Olympic Games was Turkey's first official match abroad.
During that period up until 1936, the first Turkish Championship was held in Ankara, with Harbiye winning the title. The first Turkish referee who officiated the USSR-Turkey match in 1924 at the request of FIFA was Hamdi Emin Çap. The first referee and coaching courses were also opened and the initial away matches under the National League were played in the same period.
Along with the revocation of the Turkish Sports Agency in 1938 and placement of Turkish sports under the rule of the General Directorate of Physical Training, the state started to govern football.E-Mail: tff@tff.org

Messi
Lionel Andrés Messi (Spanish pronunciation; born 24 June 1987) is an Argentine footballer who currently plays for La Liga team Barcelona and the Argentine national team. Messi is considered to be one of the best football players of his generation, having received several Ballon d'Or and FIFA World Player of the Year nominations by the age of 21. His playing style and ability have drawn comparisons to football legend Diego Maradona, who himself declared Messi his "successor".
Messi began playing football at a young age and his potential was quickly identified by Barcelona. He left Rosario-based Newell's Old Boys's youth team in 2000 and moved with his family to Europe, as Barcelona offered treatment for his growth hormone deficiency. Making his debut in the 2004–05 season, he broke the La Liga record for the youngest footballer to play a league game, and also the youngest to score a league goal. Major honours soon followed as Barcelona won La Liga in Messi's debut season, and won a double of the league and UEFA Champion League in 2006. His breakthrough season was in 2006–07: he became a first team regular, scoring a hat-trick in El Clásico and finishing with 14 goals in 26 league games. Perhaps his most successful season was the 2008–09 season, in which Messi scored 38 goals to play an integral part in a treble winning campaign.
Messi was the top scorer with six goals, including two in the final game of the 2005 FIFA World Youth Championship. Shortly thereafter, he became an established member of Argentina's senior international team. In 2006 he became the youngest Argentine to play in the FIFA World Cup and he won a runners-up medal at the Copa América tournament the following year. In 2008, in Beijing, he won his first international honour, an Olympic gold medal, with the Argentina Olympic football team.

World Cup
The FIFA World Cup, occasionally called the Football World Cup, but usually referred to simply as the World Cup, is an international football competition contested by the men's national teams of the members of Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), the sport's global governing body. The championship has been awarded every four years since the first tournament in 1930, except in 1942 and 1946 when it was not contested because of World War II.
During the 18 tournaments that have been held, seven nations have won the title. Brazil are the only team to have played in every tournament and have won the World Cup a record five times. Italy are the current champions and have won four titles, and Germany are next with three. The other former champions are Uruguay, winners of the inaugural tournament, and Argentina, with two titles each, and England and France, with one title each.
The most recent World Cup was held in Germany in 2006. The next World Cup will be held in South Africa, between 11 June and 11 July 2010, and the 2014 World Cup will be held in Brazil..
